  • Racing Post Racing Post Verdict
  • William Hill TV  William Hill TV

A red-hot handicap, boasting big-race form and a host of lightly raced, improving types who should be capable of more improvement. Wishfull Thinking and Quantitativeeasing may head the latter group, so unexposed that this is their first run in a handicap. Spirit River is lightly raced too and must not be ruled out and On Raglan Road hugely catches the eye but preference is for two who have won handicaps over 2m5f at Kempton this winter, with MICHEAL FLIPS at a much longer price than Lake Legend but well worth serious consideration.[Richard Austen]

Runner Silk Deutschland 160
Walsh, R/ Mullins, W
(28) Form: 13-4123 Age: 7 Weight: 10-9
Spotlight
 8/1  15/2 Susp.
Racing Post Logo   Spotlight :  Plenty of Irish form to suggest this is an attractive mark and although all wins have been at around 2m, he has twice gone close over 2m4f including latest start in four-way finish to conditions event at Punchestown; ground fine and one to consider.
13
Runner Silk Quantitativeeasing 154
McCoy, A P/ Henderson, N
(33) Form: 1112 Age: 5 Weight: 11-0
Spotlight
 7/1  15/2 Susp.
Racing Post Logo   Spotlight :  Very prominent in betting for the Neptune after winning sole bumper and his first two novice hurdles; odds-on for the third time this season when stepped up to this trip at Kempton and although defeated in three-way scrap, forgiven that because it was such a messy slowly run race; retains plenty of potential and impossible to rule out from calculations.
6
Runner Silk Wishfull Thinking 154
Hawkins, G/ Hobbs, P
(31) Form: 1/2-111 Age: 7 Weight: 11-5
Spotlight
 12/1  10/1 Susp.
Racing Post Logo   Spotlight :  Irish point winner two years ago who has won all three starts over hurdles at 2m3f-2m4f this season with plenty to spare, defying double penalty in runaway fashion on good to soft at Exeter last month; exciting novice with good 7lb claimer on board; very hard to put a limit on how far he can climb, so has to be taken seriously.
28
Runner Silk Shadow Dancer 155
Quinn, Gerald/ O'Neill, Jonjo
(98) Form: 11221 Age: 5 Weight: 10-1
Spotlight
 11/1  10/1 Susp.
Racing Post Logo   Spotlight :  One of so many in this field who is very lightly raced and therefore would not surprise if finding more improvement; won novice in September on good ground and dug deep at Leicester (2m4f, heavy) in December for first handicap win; up 7lb in much better race, so plenty of improvement is needed.
11
Runner Silk Sir Harry Ormesher 155
Thornton, R/ King, A
(39) Form: 2/14-FV1 Age: 7 Weight: 11-1
Spotlight
 12/1  15/1 Susp.
Racing Post Logo   Spotlight :  Highly strung by all accounts but good strike-rate and is improving; confirmed positive impression from previous start when winning useful 2m3f handicap at Doncaster (good to soft) last month, coming from rear; way he stayed on there gives hope for this trip and, although up 7lb, always the chance with one who pounced late that there is more in the tank.
8
Runner Silk Spirit River 159
Geraghty, B J/ Henderson, N
(32) Form: 51-510 Age: 5 Weight: 11-2
Spotlight
 12/1 Susp.
Racing Post Logo   Spotlight :  Much improved to win here (2m1f, soft) in December in good style; 15-2, first tried this 13lb higher mark in the totesport at Newbury where some sticky jumping (jumped well time before) came to a head with major mistake three out; otherwise looked in the process of running well and, likely to stay, this promising type must not be ruled out.
22
Runner Silk Silk Affair 157
Murphy, T J/ Quinlan, M
(39) Form: 11-0355 Age: 5 Weight: 10-6
Spotlight
 14/1  16/1 Susp.
Racing Post Logo   Spotlight :  Made it four wins on the bounce when taking the Fred Winter over 2m here last season; has run creditably this winter in two 2m6f handicaps at Sandown and Listed event at Leopardstown, on latest start taking while to get going from off pace; unlikely she can afford to do that this time and improvement needed anyway but the better ground may suit.
7
Runner Silk James De Vassy 151
Jacob, D/ Williams, N
(103) Form: 174-142 Age: 5 Weight: 11-4
Spotlight
 20/1  18/1 Susp.
Racing Post Logo   Spotlight :  Lightly raced; much improved 2m handicapper this term, winning at Chepstow before making frame at this track and Exeter; up another 4lb, however, so it looks like he will have to improve great deal for this new trip (looked to stay when tried at 2m3f last term, but at much lower form level) if he's to be leading player.
12
Runner Silk On Raglan Road 159
O'Regan, D F/ Johnson, J H
(348) Form: 122F4F- Age: 7 Weight: 11-1
Spotlight
 14/1 Susp.
Racing Post Logo   Spotlight :  Absent since last April, reportedly because of tendon injury; fascinating contender returning in this 2m5f handicap, as his last four starts last season were all Grade 2 or Grade 1 and he showed up well long way on two occasions over 3m, including when fourth in the Albert Bartlett here; very interesting.
26
Runner Silk Hampshire Express 159
Townend, P/ Mullins, W
(32) Form: 23P-001 Age: 7 Weight: 10-4
Spotlight
 20/1 Susp.
Racing Post Logo   Spotlight :  Failed to win in maiden hurdles but has had only two runs for this yard and justified good support in handicap at Gowran (2m4f, soft) latest; right up the weights for this much better race but he did the job smoothly last time and impossible to rule out further marked improvement.
4
Runner Silk Lake Legend 156
Hutchinson, W/ King, A
(81) Form: 121-P11 Age: 6 Weight: 11-6
Spotlight
 14/1  16/1 Susp.
Racing Post Logo   Spotlight :  Four from six over hurdles, first three on sound surface; on last two starts took handicaps on good to soft over 2m3f at Taunton and 2m5f at Kempton; 10lb higher than for latter race on Boxing Day but first two were 13l clear and the form has been boosted, so no shock if he turns out to be still well treated.
5
Runner Silk Mamlook 158
Scudamore, T/ Pipe, D
(32) Form: 404-214 Age: 6 Weight: 11-6
Spotlight
 20/1  16/1 Susp.
Racing Post Logo   Spotlight :  Finally won the good handicap he'd promised for some time when going in at Ascot (2m3f, soft) in January, in taking fashion too; ran very well considering drop to 2m when fourth for the totesport at Newbury (now up another 2lb); usually travels up strongly; in the form of his life but has moderate record at Cheltenham.
16
Runner Silk Silverhand 158
Carberry, P/ Meade, N
(122) Form: 62-5860 Age: 6 Weight: 10-10
Spotlight
 33/1  25/1 Susp.
Racing Post Logo   Spotlight :  No wins in this sphere since he was a juvenile but he ran well in two 2m handicaps in Ireland last April before progressing into useful 1m4f-2m Flat performer, including three wins; November visit here for big 2m handicap did not see him in anything like such a favourable light, but ground will suit and totally unexposed at the trip.
23
Runner Silk City Theatre 151
McLernon, R P/ O'Neill, Jonjo
(27) Form: 8-74131 Age: 6 Weight: 10-5
Spotlight
 20/1 Susp.
Racing Post Logo   Spotlight :  Has improved with each start over hurdles, close third in 2m3f Newbury handicap and winning novice events at Market Rasen and Ffos Las (2m4f, good to soft) starts either side; will stay and capable of more progress.
27
Runner Silk Gold Award 154
Giles, Felix De/ Henderson, N
(47) Form: 9/12F-14 Age: 7 Weight: 10-2
Spotlight
 33/1  25/1 Susp.
Racing Post Logo   Spotlight :  Justified favouritism on handicap debut on soft at Ffos Las (2m4f, the furthest he's been) in January on reappearance but outpointed at Newbury twelve days later; still very lightly raced as hurdler so could improve, but needs to.
2
Runner Silk Andytown 158
Bass, D/ Henderson, N
(81) Form: 3416-93 Age: 7 Weight: 11-8
Spotlight
 25/1  28/1 Susp.
Racing Post Logo   Spotlight :  Big improver when winning twice over this sort of trip at Cheltenham last season, trouncing a big field in the Martin Pipe; well held off revised mark (it's now 14lb higher) all three starts since and although 3m may have played a part first two occasions and he ran respectably on latest, chances are he's now too high in the weights.
24
Runner Silk Naiad du Misselot 159
Lee, G/ Murphy, F
(116) Form: 4P5-290 Age: 9 Weight: 10-5
Spotlight
 22/1 Susp.
Racing Post Logo   Spotlight :  Same mark as when winning this race two years ago; no wins since and has not often reproduced his form, but chasing for much of that period is one big explanation; did not look a lost cause over C&D in October penultimate start and trainer can be relied on to have him firing for this, but softer ground would be big help.
3
Runner Silk Micheal Flips 156
Scholfield, N/ Turnell, A
(53) Form: 06-3619 Age: 6 Weight: 11-7
Spotlight
 28/1 Susp.
Racing Post Logo   Spotlight :  Confirmed that another crack at this sort of trip was what he needed when impressive at Kempton (2m5f, soft; 9lb higher today) in January; forgiven latest Ascot run because it came just week later; cheekpieces enlisted but quite lightly raced and good chance he remains capable of better.
9
Runner Silk Takeroc 157
Skelton, H/ Nicholls, P
(32) Form: 57P7-59 Age: 7 Weight: 11-1
Spotlight
 33/1  40/1 Susp.
Racing Post Logo   Spotlight :  Spent most of the preceding two seasons chasing and is very well treated here on best of that form; however, after what looked promising reappearance here (good headway entering straight then no extra) in January, he failed to land meaningful blow in big 2m handicap at Newbury and is far from certain to be suited by this longer trip.
25
Runner Silk Good Old Thyme 150
Johnson, R/ Newland, Dr R
(15) Form: 342251 Age: 6 Weight: 10-5
Spotlight
 50/1 Susp.
Racing Post Logo   Spotlight :  Useful and has managed to get his head in front twice this season, when short price in novice events; good second to Sir Harry Ormesher over 2m3f in competitive Doncaster handicap last month and way he travels strongly often suggests he should be capable of better, but penalty for latest novice win appears to knock his chance on the head.
1
Runner Silk Chicago Grey 151
Cawley, A P/ Elliott, G
(87) Form: 261-131 Age: 7 Weight: 11-12
Spotlight
 25/1 Susp.
Racing Post Logo   Spotlight :  Off the mark over this trip (on good) final start last term and much improved this season, winning twice over 2m at Thurles and shaping as if the return to longer trips will suit; improvement needed but unexposed at this trip.
18
Runner Silk Chief Yeoman 155
Coleman, A/ Williams, Miss V
(25) Form: 0-47P34 Age: 10 Weight: 10-9
Spotlight
 40/1 Susp.
Racing Post Logo   Spotlight :  Second in the Triumph in his day but he's a 10yo now and has not achieved anything in four subsequent festival visits; lots of good efforts in other competitive handicaps and that includes Sandown and Ascot events last two outings, but he's surely too exposed to win this.
19
Runner Silk Racing Demon 156
Frost, H/ Knight, Miss H
(39) Form: 60/5P84 Age: 10 Weight: 10-9
Spotlight
Susp.
Racing Post Logo   Spotlight :  Formerly high-class chaser who missed last season; soundly beaten in hot company over fences first two runs back and although he showed up more prominently (in cheekpieces) off his much lower hurdles mark at Ascot and Sandown, in the end he did not accomplish enough to rate as a big player in this even more competitive contest.
20
Runner Silk Eleazar 156
McCarthy, J A/ Wadham, Mrs L
(145) Form: 103-51F Age: 9 Weight: 10-6
Spotlight
 40/1 Susp.
Racing Post Logo   Spotlight :  Below form at Aintree but otherwise consistent form in first half of last year and he was in process of again running well when he fell in the lead at last fence in novice at Fakenham in October (absent since); leads or races prominently these days; trip/ground will suit and not on a bad mark.
14
Runner Silk Ring The Boss 156
O'Brien, T J/ Hobbs, P
(32) Form: 10-7U00 Age: 9 Weight: 10-11
Spotlight
Susp.
Racing Post Logo   Spotlight :  Best hurdles/chase form from preceding two seasons makes this mark look very attractive; did not come up to expectations when sights were raised last term and no impact in his four hurdle starts this season but last three of those over probably unsuitable trips; showed significant ability still there in first-time blinkers latest; not impossible.
10
Runner Silk Silk Hall 149
Williams, Christian/ King, A
(12) Form: 4115-40 Age: 5 Weight: 11-1
Spotlight
 40/1  100/1 Susp.
Racing Post Logo   Spotlight :  Not much from two hurdle races this autumn and most form suggests this is a stiff mark but not discredited in Grade 2 novice at Aintree last April; big step up in trip today but some hope on that score from Flat career, as pretty useful 1m6f winner and creditable third over 2m on AW this month; hopes rest on big improvement for the trip.
15
Runner Silk Tullamore Dew 154
Treadwell, L/ Gifford, N
(53) Form: 217-257 Age: 8 Weight: 10-10
Spotlight
 50/1  100/1 Susp.
Racing Post Logo   Spotlight :  Mixed bag in three handicaps this season, going close at Fontwell (2m2f, heavy) in November; 33-1 in Mamlook's Ascot race latest start and there was a bit of promise in his seventh that day, but still plenty to prove in this top handicap.
21
Runner Silk Ballyvoile 150
Whelan, K/ Flynn, Ms M
(32) Form: 242113 Age: 7 Weight: 10-6
Spotlight
 100/1  80/1 Susp.
Racing Post Logo   Spotlight :  Improved to win novice hurdles over 2m and 2m3f on soft ground in Ireland this term; another step forward when third on handicap debut at Gowran (2m4f) last month; races prominently; much more needed in this but he is improving.
