  • William Hill TV  William Hill TV

A stronger race than usual and a real puzzle. The up-and-coming brigade are represented by Direct Times, who again impressed when winning at Newmarket last time, Fast Track, a good second over an inadequate 5f in June, and Jan Van Hoof, who is interesting for a yard with a good record in the race. From a handicapping point of view REX IMPERATOR has plenty going for him on his old form, such as his sweeping win in the Stewards' Cup two years ago, and though he's been a challenge for his previous trainers, there was enough hope in his latest Thirsk win to think that his up-and-coming trainer can bring him here in the right frame of mind again. The luck has not been with Major Jack so far but with a clear run he can go well, with Secretinthepark, Canyari and The Hooded Claw also worth a second look.[Emily Weber]

Among the many plausible options, BARREESH is selected to complete his hat-trick following a 10.4f win against 16 rivals at York which suggested that he can take another step forward over this longer trip. Arcano Gold was a length behind him that day and also staying on well. Dartmouth won so well at Ascot last time that he must be on the shortlist, while Senrima, River Dart and She Is No Lady all have notable potential and Mark Johnston's squad, as usual here, cannot be dismissed.[Richard Austen]

Legatissimo, who went so close to completing the Guineas and Oaks double, sets the standard but not by that much and others seem to be improving. DIAMONDSANDRUBIES, indeed, has improved her rating every time she's run and although the visual impression at the finish of the Pretty Polly at the Curragh last time may have been that she was rather fortunate to hang on from Legatissimo, it would not take much further progress to see her come out on top again. Lady Of Dubai is also on the up, while Star Of Seville is not dismissed.[Richard Austen]

This race stands out among the top sprint handicaps and today's event is as good, if not better, than usual. Tropics is a classy topweight who should go well, though there's a slight doubt as to whether this track suits quite as well as Newmarket, where he went agonisingly close in the July Cup last time. Magical Memory wouldn't have obvious claims on most of his form but he did look on great terms with himself at Newmarket last time and his trainer, who is proving a dab hand with sprinters, has always thought a lot of him. He makes plenty of appeal but preference is for NINJAGO, who has run really well here the last two years, particularly when second, despite giving away ground to get a run, to an above-average winner last year, and the nature of this race brings out the best in him. Ruwaiyan, fourth 12 months ago, is another who excels here and can go well again, along with Poyle Vinnie, a revelation at Hamilton last time, albeit on soft ground, and Huntsmans Close, who continues to steadily up his performance.[Emily Weber]

A huge field and a few potentially above-average sorts, but it could be worth concentrating on the Newmarket maiden contested by Folkswood (3rd), BEAST MODE (8th) and Jarir (10th). Clearly, the first named is the obvious one, but the other two shaped nicely as well, particularly Beast Mode and he appeals as worth chancing. The selection holds a Group 2 entry and is open to a bundle of improvement.[Ron Wood]

A fairytale ending to Richard Hughes's riding career seems unlikely, as Fox Trotter faces a tough task under top weight on his belated seasonal return, but the three-time champion jockey is a master around Goodwood, so you never know. Flash Fire confirmed his juvenile promise when a good winner at Sandown last time and might be on his way to a smart level, but that race fell apart so he's opposed off this much higher mark. The Johnston horses look the ones to concentrate on, in particular Enlace and DENZILLE LANE, with the latter just preferred. The selection's below-par run last time can be ignored, he's got his conditions now and he might have a bit more improvement in him.[Ron Wood]
