Coronation Stakes Day 23rd June

Coronation Stakes Day is the fourth day of racing at the Royal Ascot Festival. The five-day horse racing festival takes place at Ascot Racecourse, Berkshire, from 20th June to 24th June 2017. It comes after the excitement of the Gold Cup race (Day 3) and before the Grand Finale on Saturday. It features two Group 1 races, the Commonwealth Cup and Coronation Stakes. Group 1 races are the most prestigious and valuable races in flat racing, with Royal Ascot holding eight in total. The Coronation Stakes is the feature race of Day 4. It was established all the way back in 1840 to commemorate the crowning of Queen Victoria. The 2017 Coronation Stakes race will take place at 4.20 (UK) on Friday 23rd June.

There are six races in total on Coronation Stakes Day at Ascot. The first race, the Albany Stakes, starts at 2.30 (UK). First introduced in 2015, the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup is a recent addition to the Ascot races. Its first ever running was won by Muhaarar, with Quiet Reflection winning in 2016. The final race of the day is the Queen’s Vase. It is a fantastic Group 2 race, which has been won in the past by double Gold Cup winning legend Le Moss (1978).

Value hunting punters would have had a good time of it on Coronation Stakes Day 2016, with both a 16-1 and 33-1 winner coming home in style. Trainer Aiden O’Brien added yet another Royal Ascot win in the first race, after Brave Anna triumphed in the Albany Stakes. Frankie Dettori then showed why he is considered an all-time great by taking the King Edward VII Stakes on Across the Stars. An emotional Dougie Costello then picked up the prestigious Commonwealth Cup after a fine ride on race-favourite Quiet Reflection. It was a joyous moment for Costello, on his maiden Royal Ascot win after switching from jumps racing.

The feature race of Day 4, the Coronation Stakes, put a smile on French trainer Jean-Claude Rouget’s face. His horse, Qemah, won the race after an assured ride by jockey Gregory Benoist. It was the second year running that Rouget trained the winner of the prestigious Group 1 race. Could a French hat-trick be on the cards in 2017? The penultimate race of the day (Duke of Edinburgh Stakes) went to Kinemah with Fran Berry in the saddle. The Queen’s Vase went to Sword Fighter in a fabulous race that rounded off a thrilling Day 4. Sword Fighter’s 33-1 odds would have brought a lot of joy to those who follow Ascot long-shot tips.

Who should you bet on at Royal Ascot Day 4 2017?

A highly impressive run from Caravaggio in winning the 2016 Coventry Stakes (Royal Meeting/Day 1) has propelled him to the top of the betting in the Commonwealth Cup. The race should suit Aidan O’Brien’s unbeaten three-year-old. The horse could be a superstar in the making and is one of the jewels in the crown of O’Brien’s superb Ballydoyle training operation.
