Royal Ascot 2017 Tips and Betting Advice from William Hill

20th - 24th June

The Royal Ascot Festival will be taking place at Ascot Racecourse, Berkshire, from 20th June – 24th June 2017. It is one of the most important horse racing festivals in the world, not to mention one adored by punters up and down the country. But which trends and tips should you be looking for before you part with your money?

There are always several factors that should be considered when picking horses for Royal Ascot. Obviously, the most important thing is picking a quality horse and that means looking at the form. However, the jockey, trainer, ground and other factors should all be taken into consideration

Tip 1 – Always Check the Form Guide

Form is nearly always the best guide to picking a horse. It will tell you how the horse is faring in recent times and perhaps how it matches up against its race competitors. Take some of the winners at the 2016 Royal Ascot Festival as an example. Order of St George (Gold Cup winner) and Profitable (King’s Stand Stakes winner) had both won their last few races before lining up for Ascot. Nearly every one of the 30 Ascot winners in 2016 had at least one win in their previous three races. They say that form is temporary and class is permanent, so check the reason if your selection had a bad race recently. Perhaps the horse was held up in traffic (hampered by the other horses), or had a slight injury.

Top Tip = Make sure your horse has won over a similar distance before.

Tip 2 – Pick the Best Jockey

Jockeys are perhaps underrated as they are among some of the most skilled sportsmen (and women!) in the world. Don’t be fooled into thinking that a great horse does not need a great jockey to get over the finish line in first. The likes of Frankie Dettori and Ryan Moore get offered the best horses because they prove time and time again that they are the best at managing a sometimes difficult animal. Moore won six races at 2016 Royal Ascot, representing 20% of the races at the entire festival. This is a tremendous feat given the top British and international talent on show at Ascot. The right jockey will provide an assured hand for your selection, perhaps grinding out a win against a better horse.

Top Tip = Plenty of jockeys have won the Ascot Gold Cup two years running. Ryan Moore will look to match that feat with Order of St George in the 2017 Gold Cup.

Tip 3 – Choose the Best Trainer

Just as with the jockeys, the best trainers will be given the best horses by the owners. Operations like Aidan O’Brien’s Ballydoyle Racing Stable are attracting the best horses in the land, because they are getting results in big events like Royal Ascot. O’Brien has now trained over 50 winners at Royal Ascot. It is a sure bet that he will add many more to that number in the years to come.

Top Tip = Jockeys and trainers often strike up fruitful partnerships. Combinations like Ryan Moore and O’Brien have high strike rates in big races.

Tip 4 – Look at the Horse’s Big Race Record

Take it as a given that the majority of horses who race at Royal Ascot are of the highest quality. However, some can show themselves to be better than the rest. The vast majority of Ascot winners will have won at least one top class race before. An even better indicator is if the horse has won a big race at Ascot before. Churchill, Caravaggio, Lady Aurelia and Galileo Gold all fit this bill going into Royal Ascot 2017.

Top Tip = check the average age of the previous winners in your selected race. Does your selection fit the bill?

Tip 5 – Does your Horse Like the Going?

If you have ever tried to run across a muddy field, you can appreciate that it can be just as difficult for a horse running at 40mph. However, some horses cope better with the different ground than others. Check the race record of your selection and match it to the going for the day.

Top Tip = a horse’s odds might start getting bigger the day of the race. This is often a sign that its ‘connections’ are worried about its liking for the ground.

Tip 6 – Check the BHA Rating for your Selection

If you don’t trust your own opinion, get an opinion from the experts. The BHA (British Horse Racing Authority) will provide a rating, which can be seen on every race card. Statistically, the higher the BHA rating, the better the strike rate for your selection. Mecca’s Angel, Postponed, Order of St George and Found are all at the top end of the ratings going into this season. Expect some measure of success for all of the above in 2017.

Top Tip = Track your horse’s rating – are they moving up or down over the course of the season?
