Gold Cup Day 22nd June

Gold Cup Day (22nd June) at Royal Ascot falls on the third day of the historic horse racing festival. It also acts as Ladies’ Day at Ascot, so expect fierce fashion to match the furious action on the track. It is the third day of racing at Royal Ascot, which takes place from 20th – 24th June 2017. The festival holds thirty races in total, with other important races including the St James’s Palace Stakes (20th June), Coronation Stakes (23rd June) and the Diamond Jubilee Stakes (24th June). The Gold Cup race is arguably the most important race of the Ascot Festival. It will take place on Wednesday 22nd June at 4.20pm.

Ladies’ Day obviously brings a lot of festivities off the track at Ascot. The frocks and finery are all part of the dress code for Ladies’ Day, with formal attire mandatory in the Royal Enclosure. It is an important social event for the great and the good at Ascot. If you are lucky enough to get tickets, remember to dress for the occasion!

Sill, all the best action takes place on the track at Ascot. The historic Gold Cup race stretches back to the 19th century and is still one of the world’s most important flat races. It is the first leg of the prestigious Stayers’ Triple Crown, followed by the Goodwood Cup and Doncaster Cup. Double Trigger is the last horse to achieve the famous hat-trick. The Gold Cup has been won in the past by superstars like Sagaro and Le Moss, but pride of place goes to Irish horse Yeats with four consecutive wins (2006-2009). His trainer, Aidan O’Brien, holds the record for the most wins with seven, including last year’s winner Order of St George. Other important races on Gold Cup Day include the Norfolk Stakes (2.30pm) and the Ribblesdale Stakes (3.40pm).

Ascot Gold Cup Day Results and Review 2016

In the opening race of Day 3, Luke Morris opened his Royal Ascot account by winning the Norfolk Stakes on Prince of Lir. William Buick then landed his second winner of the week with Hawkbill in the Tercentenary Stakes. The Ryan Moore and Aidan O’Brien partnership then struck gold by winning the Ribblesdale Stakes with Even Song. If anything, the win kick started the week for Moore, who had received some criticism for his tactics earlier in the festival. The best was still to come for the talented jockey.

The 2016 Gold Cup was an intriguing race. Despite being odds on favourite, doubts still lingered over the chances of Order of St George. Those fears were soon dismissed as Ryan Moore had a masterful ride to deliver a seventh Gold Cup into the grateful hands of trainer Aidan O’Brien. Order of St George is just five-years-old and could have plenty more wins to come in his career. He is likely to start as the favourite in the 2017 Gold Cup betting. Other wins on Day 3 of Ascot came for Defrocked in the Britannia Stakes and Guy Fawkes in the King George V Stakes.

Order of St George proved that he has all the tools to become a superstar. Could he possibly join the all-time greats by winning more than one Gold Cup? He has the perfect trainer in Aidan O’Brien and the perfect jockey in Ryan Moore to deliver on that promise. He will likely start as a worthy favourite for the Gold Cup.
