Tepin, a superb American horse, took the first race of the Royal Meeting 2016 in a rain-soaked day at Ascot. Its victory in the Queen Anne Stakes with Julien Leparoux in the saddle was her first outing on European soil. Profitable won the second Group 1 race of the day, the King’s Stand Stakes. The day’s feature race went to the Galileo Gold with the ageless Frankie Dettori all smiles at the winning post. Galileo Gold beat the well-fancied The Gurkha to take win. Caravaggio took the Coventry Stakes, after an impressive run that promised more to come in 2017.

The day opened with a fine win for William Buick on Ribchester in the Jersey Stakes. Dettori then rode Lady Aurelia to glory in the Queen Mary Stakes. The main race, the Prince of Wales’s Stakes was won by My Dream Boat. It was the second day running that Adam Kirby rode the winner of the feature race, soundly beating the race-favourite Found. Dettori landed his second winner on Persuasive in the final race, the Sandringham Stakes.

Gold Cup Day, which also doubles up as Ladies’ Day at Ascot, is often the most exciting of the festival. The Gold Cup Race didn’t disappoint either, with hot-favourite Order of St George taking the win ahead of Mizzou. It would mean that Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien claimed his seventh Gold Cup victory – a stunning achievement. O’Brien had another winner with Even Song in the Ribblesdale Stakes. Luke Morris rode Prince of Lir to victory in the first race of Ladies’ Day, the Norfolk Stakes.

The final day at Royal Ascot 2016 saw Ryan Moore stamp his authority as the top jockey of the festival. He opened with two wins on Churchill (Chesham Stakes) and Sir Isaac Newton (Wolferton Rated Stakes). The win on Churchill was particularly impressive, with the horse likely to figure prominently in the 2017 Ascot betting. The feature race, the Diamond Jubilee Stakes, was also won by Moore on Twilight Son. However, the biggest cheer from the Ascot crowds came for Hardwicke Stakes winner Dartmouth. The Sir Michael Stoute trained horse is owned by Queen Elizabeth II and came in at odds of 10-1.
