The Royal Meeting

The opening day of Royal Ascot (Royal Meeting) starts on Tuesday 20th June 2017. It is the first of five days of spectacular horse racing at the Ascot Racecourse, Berkshire, southern England. The festival will welcome some of the finest flat racing horses and riders in the world for 30 races, including eight prestigious Group 1 races. Highlights of the week include the Gold Cup race (Ladies’ Day, 22nd June), the Diamond Jubilee Stakes (24th June) and Coronation Stakes (23rd June). Although there is a much pageantry off the track at Ascot, the racing will always take centre stage. It is widely considered as one of the most important horse racing festivals in the world. It will run from the 20th – 24th June this year.

Opening Day at Royal Ascot is one of the most important days at the festival. It features three Group 1 races – the Queen Anne Stakes, the King’s Stand Stakes and the St James’s Palace Stakes. The latter is the feature race of the day. It has been won in the past by stars like Chief Singer and Rock of Gibraltar. There are six races in total on Day 1 at Ascot, with the St James’s Palace Stakes taking place at 4.20pm. The opening race, the Queen Anne Stakes, will take place at 2.30pm.

2016 Royal Ascot Day 1 Results and Review

A rain-soaked opening day at Royal Ascot 2016 did not dampen the spirits of the thousands of race goers. The festival opened with an assured victory from American horse Tepin in the Queen Anne Stakes. It was a first run for Tepin in Europe, but the mare showed why she was so highly rated across the Atlantic. Ryan Moore then rode Caravaggio to victory in the Coventry Stakes. It would not be the last time that the crowds would see Moore celebrating at the winning post that week. The Group 1 King’s Stand Stakes was next. It saw a nice win for Adam Kirby on Profitable. The victory was particularly sweet for Kirby who had found out he had just become a father two hours beforehand!

Galileo Gold took the main race of the day, the St James’s Palace Stakes, with Frankie Dettori in the saddle. Dettori is incredibly popular with the Ascot crowds, having landed Ascot winners in three different decades. There was delight for Ireland’s Jarlath Fahey, after his horse Jennies Jewel won the Ascot Stakes. The win proved that even a small training operation like Fahey’s can mix it with the big boys at Ascot. The final race of the opening day at Ascot (Windsor Castle Stakes) went to Ardad.

Who to bet on at the Royal Meeting in 2017?

Possibly the best race to bet on at Royal Ascot’s opening day is the St James’s Palace Stakes. The feature race of the day has been won by the 2000 Guineas winner (Newmarket, 6th May) the last two years. Therefore, pay special attention to Churchill, who should start as race favourite in 2017. Aidan O’Brien’s charge has also good form at Ascot, winning the Chesham Stakes last year. Other winning horses on Day 1 of Ascot could include Minding, Lady Aurelia and Solow.
