Political betting – what to look out for

General and UK election odds

Before every general election, you can get the latest UK election odds from William Hill.

Don't forget that the Scottish political betting is also around and you can find things such as Referendum betting.

US election Odds

The American political landscape is as polarised as it's been since the late 1960s.

The Republican and Democratic parties are miles apart on every issue from climate change to trade policy, immigration, healthcare and the role America should play on the world stage.

Presidential betting is fundamental in political betting, not only in the US but also across the globe. So, the stakes could hardly be higher when Americans vote for president, and the ripples are felt across the globe.

US election odds  take place every four years. The winner is the candidate who gets the most votes in the Electoral College.

With William Hill, you can get the next US president odds and which states will turn red or blue.

Conservative leadership odds

The fortunes of a Conservative leader can go downhill quickly.

Take Margaret Thatcher. In 1987, she won her third general election in a landslide on the back of an economic boom. But, just two years later she was driven away from Number 10 in tears.

Get next Tory leader odds and see who stands more chances of winning the next Conservative leadership right here.

Political betting jargon buster

− Popular vote

When a candidate wins the most votes. In America, this doesn't decide the presidency – that comes down to the Electoral College. In the UK, the winning party in a general election is the one that takes the most seats and gets a majority in Parliament.

− US Presidential Election Debate

Before a US Election, the candidates normally have three televised debates, held on different news channels with different moderators.

− State betting

Each state in America is worth a certain number of votes in the Electoral College. A presidential candidate collects all those votes when they win a state – no matter how small the margin.

− Seats

There are 650 parliamentary constituencies in the UK, and these translate into seats in Parliament. The party that wins the general election is the one that gets the majority. If no party manages this, there's a ‘hung parliament', when parties either form a coalition or another election is held.

Tips on political betting

If you are betting on elections, you should keep an eye on the most respected polls.

In the UK, these include Ipsos MORI, Opinium and YouGov. In America, CNN and MSNBC run regular polls, plus you have polling firms like FiveThirtyEight, which was founded by the famous number−cruncher Nate Silver.

Don't forget that every poll includes a margin for error, and they all get it wrong sometimes!

Also don't forget seasonality and political context. Has the prime minister changed quite recently? Then what are the next health secretary's odds? Find this and other popular bets on politics here on this very page!

Our news site is full of betting tips on politics  and information that can help with your bets.
