England’s Football League Two is made up of 24 clubs who play each other on a home and away basis. Unlike the other three professional leagues, the top three sides are automatically promoted at the end of each season. This means that the winner of the playoffs out of the teams ending up in the 4th–7th places get promoted to Football League One. By the same token, the bottom two sides get relegated to the Conference Premier, presuming the Conference club can host League Two matches.
Last season Portsmouth were crowned League Two champions. It was a remarkable championship victory, given that Portsmouth never topped the table at any point in the season until the last few minutes of the final round of games. Joining Portsmouth in the new pastures of League One will be Plymouth, Doncaster and play-off winners Blackpool. The new arrivals relegated from League One are Port Vale, Chesterfield, Coventry City and Swindon Town. Lincoln City and Forest Green have come up from the National League. The former is famous for an incredible FA Cup run last season, the latter for their commitment to being the most eco-friendly team in modern football.
2017/18 is set to be an open season in EFL League Two. Coventry City and Luton Town are perhaps the two biggest ‘sleeping giants’ in the division, with both clubs seeing themselves as belonging in the upper tiers of English football. However, it might be Mansfield Town who come up trumps in the battle to be crowned champions. The little-known Nottinghamshire club has shown plenty of ambition in the summer transfer window, adding players like Lee Angol and Zander Diamond to their ranks. As an aside, Mansfield have local rivalries with Chesterfield and Notts County, so expect plenty of tough-tackling derby action in League Two this season.
As League Two is the bottom tier of professional football in England, it comes as no surprise that the fear of relegation to the National League often matches the excitement of winning promotion to League One. The cost of relegation can be dire. Few clubs will want to face a similar fate to Hartlepool and Leyton Orient last year. Every game is crucial, making League Two an exciting competition to follow.
