Epsom Downs Racecourse

Located near the town of Epsom, Surrey, Epsom Downs Racecourse is one of Britain’s premier horse racing venues. The course is used for flat racing, and holds some of the most prestigious flat races in the UK, including the Derby, the Oaks and Coronation Cup. It is a left-handed course, over a mile and a half. It includes a few signature features, such as the downhill, and extremely fast, five furlong straight course, that make Epsom Downs unique. It is one of the most prestigious venues for horse racing in the UK, and a fitting home for one of the world’s best horse races.

Epsom Downs - Home of the Derby

Epsom Downs Racecourse is steeped in history. Horse racing has been recorded there since the middle of the 17th century. It is been the home of the Derby since its inception in 1780, which has gone on to become one of the richest and most prestigious horse races in the world. It is also the scene of the famous suffragette, Emily Davison, throwing herself in front of King George V’s horse in 1913. It has, of course, been the venue for many legendary feats in horse racing, including Shergar winning the Derby by 10 lengths in 1981 and Lester Piggott’s incredible nine Derby victories. There has always been a ‘Royal’ flavour to the Epsom Downs races, with members of the Royal Family still regularly making appearances to this day.

Racing at Epsom Downs forms an integral part of the flat season. April sees some great handicap races, including the Great Metropolitan Handicap, as well as trials for the Epsom Derby. June is the highlight month in the Epsom calendar, featuring all three Group 1 races - the Oaks, the Derby and the Coronation Cup. You can also catch the Princess Elizabeth Stakes, Surrey Stakes and Woodcote Stakes in June, all worthy races in their own right. The highlights however, are the Oaks and the Derby, which showcase top class flat racing at its finest.

You can follow the Epsom Downs races throughout the summer months, until the season draws to a close in late September. There is always a grandiose flavour to the meetings there, and of course if you are lucky enough to get tickets to the Derby you will be watching history unfold before your eyes.
