It is possibly the highlight of the five-day horse racing spectacular as it features the Gold Cup race, one of Britain’s most prestigious races. Gold Cup Day is also notable for being Ladies’ Day at Ascot, so expect to see fierce fashion to match the action on the track. There are six races in total on Day 3 of Ascot, with other highlights including the Norfolk Stakes and Ribblesdale Stakes. The 2017 Ascot Gold Cup will take place at 4.20 (UK) on Thursday 22nd June. The Royal Ascot Festival will take place at Ascot Racecourse, Berkshire from Tuesday 20th June to Saturday 24th June.

Ladies’ Day at Royal Ascot is billed as ‘the world’s most glamorous race day’. It is seen as an important event in both the sporting and social calendars. If you are lucky enough to get tickets, it is important to be aware of the dress code on Ladies’ Day. The real fashions at Ascot are on the track however. The festival welcomes the best horses, jockeys and trainers from all over the world. The Gold Cup race is one of the world’s most prestigious events for ‘stayers’ (long distance specialists). The race has taken place at Ascot since 1807, with notable winners including the masterful Yeats and three-time winner Sagaro. It is the first leg of the Stayers’ Triple Crown. Following Ascot is the Goodwood Cup and Doncaster Cup to round out the Crown. The last horse to win the Triple Crown was Double Trigger (1995). Yeats’s trainer, Aidan O’Brien, has a record seven wins in the event.

2016 Gold Cup Day Results and Review

Ladies Day at Royal Ascot 2016 opened with a slight surprise in the opening race as Prince of Lir defied soft ground to win the Norfolk Stakes. It would mark the first win at Royal Ascot for jockey Luke Morris. William Buick then rode his second winner of the week after taking the Tercentenary Stakes on Hawkbill. The third race of Gold Cup Day went to race favourite Even Song with Ryan Moore in the saddle. It would serve as a nice warm up for the subsequent big race, with Moore set to ride the favourite Order of St George.

Despite being odds on to take the Gold Cup, doubts still hovered around Order of St George before the race. Many questioned if Aidan O’Brien’s young charge had the temperament and experience to overcome a field where he was likely to be held up. Others suggested that Moore’s failure to navigate traffic on The Gurkha in the St James’s Palace Stakes two days previously would be still on his mind. Those fears were allayed when Moore, despite being stuck in the pack with half a mile to go, weaved his way through the traffic and won by a convincing three lengths from Mizzou. It would be the seventh Gold Cup win for trainer Aidan O’Brien and lead to Order of St George being crowned Cartier Champion Stayer 2016. Other wins on Ascot Gold Cup Day 2016 came for Defrocked in the Britannia Stakes and Guy Fawkes in the King George V Stakes.

Who to bet on for Ladies’ Day at Royal Ascot 2017?

Order of St George is expected to be near the head the betting for the Ascot Gold Cup once again in 2017. Aidan O’Brien’s mount is a class act, sired by the same horse (Galileo) as greats like Frankel and Ruler of the World. He is not as unbeatable as other members of his illustrious family however, so expect others like Simple Verse and Vazirabad to be in with a decent chance.
