Champion Hurdle Day

What to bet on during 2018 Champion Hurdle Day

Day 1 - Tuesday 13 March

The races and runners on day one of Cheltenham Festival 2018

The Cheltenham Roar is one of the biggest guarantees of every Cheltenham Festival and 2018 is sure to be no exception when the runners start racing in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle. That’s the first race of the entire Festival at 13:30 on Tuesday 13th March. A good tip has been betting on a horse owned by Rich Ricci, trained by Willie Mullins and ridden by Ruby Walsh in recent years, as this trio were among the Cheltenham winners in 2013, 2014 and 2015 respectively with Champagne Fever, Vautour and Douvan. This trio are responsible for the clear favourite in the 2018 Supreme Novices’ Hurdle betting odds in Getabird. There are other strong tips in the Cheltenham day one betting too, particularly Buveur D’Air in the Champion Hurdle at 15:30 and Apple’s Jade in the Mares’ Hurdle at 16;10. The other races on the Cheltenham Festival’s opening day are the Arkle Trophy at 14:10, the Ultima Handicap Chase at 14:50, the National Hunt Chase at 16:50 and the Close Brothers Novices’ Handicap Chase at 17:30.

The Champion Hurdle betting shows an odds-on favourite

Looking back at past Champion Hurdle results, the history books show a collection of repeat winners. The most recent runners to successfully defend their crowns were Istabraq (a Champion Hurdle winner in 1998, 1999 and 2000) and Hardy Eustace in both 2004 and 2005. Buveur D’Air is a popular tip to add his name to this list and is arguably one of the biggest bankers of the 2018 Cheltenham Festival to repeat his Champion Hurdle win of 2017. My Tent Or Yours satisfied each-way bets last year by finishing second and is a contender to finish in the same position again, with Willie Mullins trio Faugheen, Yorkhill and Melon being the others with the potential to make a race of it.

In terms of a Cheltenham accumulator, a Lucky 15 on Getabird, Footpad, Buveur D’Air and Apple’s Jade is bound to be a popular bet on day one of the Festival.

The results and winners from Champion Hurdle Day 2017

The opening day of the 2017 Cheltenham Festival could not have gone much better for trainer Gordon Elliott as he saddled three winners. Labaik took the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at 25/1, before Apple’s Jade followed up in the Mares’ Hurdle and Tiger Roll surged to victory in the National Hunt Chase. The current Cheltenham Festival betting isn’t predicting another Elliott day-one hat-trick, but we’ll have to wait and see. These were the winning horses, jockeys and trainers from the 2017 Festival.
