Bet on Champion Hurdle Day With William Hill

Day 1 - Tuesday 14 March

Bet on 2017 Champion Hurdle Day with William Hill

Cheltenham Champion Hurdle Day will take place on Tuesday 14th March 2017. It is the opening day of the Cheltenham Festival, which is held at the Cheltenham Racecourse, Gloucestershire. The festival is world renowned and features some of the most compelling races in the jumps calendar, including the Neptune Investment Hurdle, Champion Chase, JCB Triumph Hurdle, JLT Novices' Chase and, of course, the Cheltenham Gold Cup. Cheltenham Champion Hurdle Day is named after the most prestigious race of the day, the Champion Hurdle Challenge Trophy. The Champion Hurdle 2017 starts at 15.30pm on Tuesday 14th March. Champion Hurdle Day begins with the first race, the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at 13.30pm.

The Champion Hurdle race is one of the most prestigious races in the national hunt calendar and, arguably, the most important hurdle race in the world. It has been part of the Cheltenham Festival since 1927, and it has been won by some of the most famous names in the sport, including Istabraq, Persian War and Faugheen. The Champion Hurdle is run over two miles 110 yards. The 2017 Champion Hurdle Day odds are shaping up nicely, with Buveur D’Air, Yanworth and Petit Mouchoir all leading the way.

  • March 17 - St Patrick's - Day 3 Cheltenham Racecourse
  • March 18 - Gold Cup - Day 4 Cheltenham Racecourse
  • 2017 Champion Hurdle Day Betting Guide

Champion Hurdle Day at the 2017 Cheltenham Festival promises to be an intriguing one. Conceivably, Willie Mullins could have four horses - Annie Power, Vroum Vroum Mag, Yorkhill and Faugheen - among the favourites for the Champion Hurdle. Faugheen may be the most intriguing bet of all, injury ruled him out of the 2016 Festival, but he is generally regarded as one of the best hurdlers of the last few decades. Regardless of the final results, Day 1 will set the tone for the rest of an exciting festival, with Ladies' Day (Day 2, 15th March), St Patrick's Thursday (Day 3, 16th March) and Gold Cup Day (Day 4, 17th March) promising more thrills to come.

    Champion Hurdle - 2016 Results & Winners

Looking back to last year's Cheltenham results for Day 1, and we find some familiar names on the roll of honour. Yes, for the last few years the opening day has 'belonged' to two men - Willie Mullins and Ruby Walsh. The Irish pair should always be considered when choosing who to bet on for Champion Hurdle Day 2017. As a trainer and jockey team they would win three of the seven races, with Douvan winning the Arkle, Vroum Vroum Mag landing the Mares' Hurdle and Annie Power winning the Champion Hurdle. The latter was one of the most talked about races in recent memory, with Annie Power silencing her critics after a bad fall in 2015. As with most Cheltenham races over the last decade, the 2017 Champion Hurdle Day Race odds should feature Mullins and Walsh near the top again.

Mullins and Walsh did not have it all their own way though, coming second in the Supreme Novices' Hurdle to Altior. Their charge, Min, did not have enough in the end to match Nicky Henderson's horse, in what was a sweet victory for 2015 Gold Cup winning jockey Nico de Boinville. Other Day 1 results saw Un Temps Pour Tout win the Festival Handicap Chase, Minella Rocco win the Festival Chase Challenge Cup and Ballyalton win the Close Novices' Handicap Chase.
