Cheltenham Festival 2016 Results - Top Horses and Jockeys

Tuesday 14 - Friday 17 March

Cheltenham Festival 2016 Winners

Cheltenham 2016 was another storied chapter in the rich history of this world renowned horse racing festival. The 2016 Cheltenham Festival results will show the winners, but do not tell the full story of the great drama and excitement that unfolded across the four days. There were big race wins, landing redemption for Annie Power and Sprinter Sacre; a reassertion of dominance in the form of Douvan, Vautour and, of course, Willie Mullins; and a new superstar was born in Don Cossack, winner of the 2016 Cheltenham Gold Cup.

The ‘winner’ of the Cheltenham Festival in 2016 must once again be Willie Mullins, who won the Top Trainer award for the fourth year running. Of course, Ruby Walsh was also one of the big Cheltenham Festival winners after taking the Top Jockey award for an incredible 10th time. The race results for Cheltenham are records of sporting history, but do not tell the full story of Cheltenham races winners like Don Cossack and Sprinter Sacre.

Cheltenham Horse Racing Results

Race Results - Day 1 - Champion Hurdle Day

The race results for Champion Hurdle Day were a mixture of new stars and returning conquerors. Day 1 (Champion Hurdle Day) at Cheltenham always gets the Festival off to a flyer with some of the week's top races. The results at Cheltenham opening day in 2016 saw the usual blend of shocks and triumphs for the favourites. As has been the case in the last few years, the early Cheltenham race results tended to go the way of Irish trainer Willie Mullins and jockey Ruby Walsh. Although the Mullins/Walsh duo was beaten to second place by Altior in the Supreme Novices' Hurdle, they nevertheless landed big wins with Douvan (the Arkle), Annie Power (Champion Hurdle) and Vroum Vroum Mag (Mares' Hurdle). Other Day 1 Cheltenham racing results saw Tom Scudamore ride Un Temps Pour Tout to victory in the Festival Handicap Chase, Minella Rocco score a fine win in the National Hunt Chase, and Ballyalton take the last race of the day, the Novices' Handicap Chase.

Race Results - Day 2 - Ladies Day

The race results for Ladies’ Day were testament to the fact that the horses are the stars of the show at the Festival. Ladies' Day at Cheltenham 2016 was another treat for the spectators, featuring one of the greatest comebacks in horse racing history. The day opened with a 'business as usual' victory for Mullins and Walsh with Yorkhill landing the Grade 1 Neptune Investment Novices' Hurdle. Blaklion then surprised a few punters with a win in the RSA Chase. Other Cheltenham races results on Day 2 saw Any Currency win the Cross Country Chase, Diego Du Charmil win the Fred Winter, Diamond King take the Handicap Hurdle and Ballyandy win the Champion Bumper. But the day belonged to Sprinter Sacre, a horse that was once written off as finished. When 'Sprinter' and Nico de Boinville crossed the line to win the Queen Mother Champion Chase there was barely a dry eye in the racecourse, an image that will never be forgotten.

Race Results - Day 3 - St Patrick's Day

The race results for St Patrick’s Thursday were a mixed bag for the Irish and British alike. Day 3 racing results Cheltenham 2016 heralded the arrival of a new world class hurdler, with Thistlecrack taking the World Hurdle in a dominant performance. It also showcased the undoubted talents of Vautour, who won the Ryanair Chase with little fuss. Other results of a thrilling day of racing saw Black Hercules take the JLT Novices' Chase, Mall Dini win the Pertemps Final, Empire of Dirt land the Festival Group Plate, Limini hand Walsh and Mullins their 3rd win of the day in the Mares Novices' Hurdle and Cause of Causes win the Challenge Cup.

Race Results - Day 4 - Gold Cup Day

The race results for Gold Cup Day saw a new superstar emerge from Gordon Elliot’s stables. Despite the incredible action that was witnessed throughout the Festival, everyone was waiting to see the 2016 Cheltenham Gold Cup results. It was one of the strongest fields in living memory, with the likes of Don Poli, Cue Card, Djakadam and Don Cossack all fancying their chances of success. In the end it was Don Cossack who triumphed, landing a first Gold Cup win for jockey Bryan Cooper and trainer Gordon Elliott. It was a fine, yet gruelling, race, one that saw Don Cossack outclass the monstrously built Djakadam to win by 4 ½ lengths.

The beauty of Cheltenham is that each day is packed full of races with so much quality that they are not overshadowed by the 'big ones'. The final day opened with a thrilling win for crowd favourite Barry Geraghty on Ivanovich Gorbatov in the JCB Triumph Hurdle. The next couple of races saw Superb Story take the Vincent O'Brien County Handicap Hurdle and Unowhatimeanharry win the Albertt Bartlett Novices' Hurdle. After the main course of the Gold Cup, the final three races of Cheltenham 2016 went to On the Fringe, Ibis du Rheu and Solar Impulse respectively.
