Cheltenham Festival 2017 Results - Top Horses and Jockeys

Tuesday 13 - Friday 16 March

Cheltenham Festival 2017 Winners

The 2017 Cheltenham races results threw up an intriguing mix of shock winners and dominant favourites. Perhaps the biggest surprise of the festival was the lack of Day 1 winners for either jockey Ruby Walsh or trainer Willie Mullins. The Irish duo are usually so dominant on Champion Hurdle Day, but ended up going home empty-handed. The pair soon made up for it though, with a flurry of wins, including the World Hurdle, on Day 3. The week also provided some wonderful Cheltenham results for trainer Gordon Elliott, who ended up with six wins in total, and Jessica Harrington who trained the winner of the biggest prize of all - the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Race Results - Day 1 - Champion Hurdle Day

As mentioned, the Day 1 Cheltenham race results were something of a surprise. Not seeing Mullins or Walsh celebrating is a rare occurrence, but Irish racing fans still celebrated with a Gordon Elliott treble. The Gigginstown trainer took the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle (Labaik), Mares’ Hurdle (Apple’s Jade) and National Hunt Chase (Tiger Roll) to end the day with three wins. The feature race, the Champion Hurdle, went to Buveur D’Air, in what was a superb ride by Noel Fehily to win by 4 ½ lengths. It was trainer Nicky Henderson’s second big win of the day, as he also trained the winner of the Arkle, Altior.

Race Results - Day 2 - Ladies Day

The shock results at Cheltenham 2017 continued into Day 2, Ladies’ Day. Everyone was expecting Douvan to win the Queen Mother Champion Chase with plenty to spare, but Willie Mullins’ superstar could only limp to seventh place. The win went to Special Tiara, in what was an emotional moment for trainer Henry De Bromhead. Willoughby Court took the opening race, the Neptune Investment Hurdle, after a fine ride by jockey Davy Bass. Amateur jockey Jamie Codd also wrote his name into Cheltenham legend by taking both the Cross Country Chase and Champion Bumper in some style.

Race Results - Day 3 - St Patrick's Day

If Day 1 and Day 2 Cheltenham racing results had left Ruby Walsh’s fans downhearted, they needn’t have worried. St Patrick’s Thursday saw a racing masterclass by the legendary Irish jockey. Walsh took no less than four wins on Day 3, bagging the JLT Novices’ Chase, Ryanair Chase, World Hurdle and Mares Novices’ Hurdle. It was the most important race, the World Hurdle, that saw Walsh at his best, leading Nichols Canyon to victory ahead of red-hot favourite Unowhatimeanharry. There were other big wins for Davy Russell on Presenting Percy (Pertemps Final) and Bryan Cooper on Road to Respect (Festival Group Plate). Georgina Andrews then sent the punters home happy by riding 40-1 shot Domesday Book to victory in the Challenge Cup Handicap Chase.

Race Results - Day 4 - Gold Cup Day

The final day of Cheltenham 2017 provided the festival with a fitting finale. All talk beforehand was of course about the Gold Cup race. It did not disappoint. The race saw the lead change hands several times between the likes of Native River and Djakadam, before a pulsating finish allowed Sizing John to take the win. It was a sweet victory for trainer Jessica Harrington and jockey Robbie Power, who both enjoyed a festival to remember. Several of these brilliant chasers could be back for the 2018 Gold Cup, which bodes well for another thrilling race.

In the other final day racing results Cheltenham fans were treated to a win by Richard Johnson on Defin Du Seuil in the JCB Triumph Hurdle. Johnson is hugely popular with racing fans, but has possibly not had the luck deserving of his talent at Cheltenham. Paul Townend landed a nice double, and more glory for trainer Willie Mullins, when winning the Vincent O’Brien Handicap Hurdle on Arctic Fire and the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle on Penhill. A week of superb Cheltenham results for Harrington and Power came to a close with a fine win on Rock the World in the Grand Annual Chase, which was the final race of the 2017 Cheltenham Festival.
