Grand National Day is the final day of the Aintree Grand National Festival. The three-day national hunt horse racing event features 21 races, and includes the world famous Grand National. It is held at Aintree Racecourse, near Liverpool, and will feature some of the best jumps horses and jockeys from the UK and Ireland. Grand National Day 2018 will fall on Saturday 14th April. The first race of Grand National Day, Gaskell’s Handicap Hurdle, will go off at 13.45pm. The Grand National race will start at 17.15pm. Other important races held on Day 3 of the Grand National Festival include the Liverpool Hurdle and Mersey Novices’ Hurdle.

2018 Grand National Day Betting Guide

Obviously, much of the focus of the on the final day of the Aintree Festival goes on the Grand National race. It is, after all, one the biggest sporting events to be held in the UK. However, there are plenty more action-packed races for horse racing fans to get excited about. The Liverpool Hurdle is always a race full of quality and often features those who have competed in the World Hurdle at Cheltenham.

A number of horses have won both races in the same year, most recently Thistlecrack in 2016. As the final day of the festival wears on however, the excitement inevitably builds towards the big race. One For Arthur won the Grand National in 2017, after a thrilling ride by jockey Derek Fox. Injury has ruled One For Arthur out of the 2018 race, but don’t be surprised to see the likes of Blaklion and Cause of Causes return to improve on good performances last year.

Grand National Day - 2017 Results & Winners

Fountains Windfall opened up Grand National Day 2017 with a comprehensive win in the Gaskell’s Handicap Hurdle. The result never looked in doubt when jockey David Noonan pulled the horse eight lengths clear with three fences to jump. Jockey Robbie Power and trainer Colin Tizard continued their rich vein of form in the festival by winning the Mersey Novices’ Hurdle with Finian’s Oscar and the Handicap Chase with Sizing Codelco. Yanworth made up for a disappointing Cheltenham Festival by winning the Stayers Liverpool Hurdle. San Benedeto added another Maghull Novices’ Chase victory to Paul Nicholls, and Chesterfield closed the festival with a win in the Pinsent Masons’ Handicap Hurdle.

The 2017 Grand National race was up there among the best in recent times. A couple of fallers at the first fence did not hamper the race too much, with Rogue Angel taking an early lead amid the chaos. The race favourite, Blaklion, then took the lead with around a quarter of the distance still to go. It wasn’t until the final fence that One For Arthur caught Blaklion, with Derek Fox getting the most out of the horse and leading him home in style. Cause of Causes came close behind in second, but the day belonged to One For Arthur, jockey Derek Fox and trainer Lucinda Russell.
