2017 Grand National Day Betting Options - Pick your Grand National Runners

Grand National Day 2017 takes place on Saturday 8th April, with the Grand National Race itself going off at 17:15(UK). Grand National Day is possibly the most eagerly awaited day of horse racing in the world. It is the third and final day of the Grand National Festival, coming after Opening Day (Day 1) and Ladies’ Day (Day 2). The Festival is held at Aintree Racecourse, north west England, and it, of course, holds the world’s most famous horse race, the Grand National. Aside from the ‘big one’ there are six other quality races held on Day 3, including the Stayers’ Hurdle and Doom Bar Novices’ Chase.

The six other races on Grand National Day provide much more than a warm up for the Grand National race. While the National is a gruelling test of stamina, the other races showcase some of the best hurdlers and mid-distance chasers in horse racing. The first race on Grand National Day is the Gaskells Waste Management Handicap Hurdle (13.45 UK). This is followed by three Grade 1 races – Mersey Novices’ Hurdle, Mahgull Novices’ Chase and Liverpool Stayers Hurdle. You could build a festival around these races in their own right, such is the quality on show.

Obviously, all eyes will be on the big race in the evening. If you are not one of the lucky ones to get tickets, you can watch the Grand National race live on ITV. Grand National winners are part of sporting history, with the race providing drama like few others. Even those who do not normally have a bet will have a flutter on Grand National runners.

Grand National - Day 3 - 2016 Results & Winners

Grand National Day 2016 was a fitting end to a brilliant festival. Thistlecrack showed tremendous form to win the Stayers’ Hurdle, an impressive ride that should be an ominous warning to rivals of this star in the making. The other two Grade 1 races saw Yorkhill land the spoils for Willie Mullins in the Mersey Novices' Hurdle and Douvan make it a double for team Mullins in the Doom Bar Novices’ Chase. Those three came in as odds on favourites, but those who like some value in their bets were left smiling when Maggio came in at 50-1 in the Handicap Chase. The day was bookended by Ubak winning the first race, the Gaskells Waste Management Handicap Hurdle, and Ivan Grozny making it a hat trick of winners for Willie Mullins in the last race of the day, the Pinsent Masons Handicap Hurdle.

Of course, while it was a good day for Willie Mullins and Ruby Walsh, all eyes remained on the big race, the Grand National. It was an intriguing race with both pre-race favourites, Many Clouds and the Last Samuri, looking like they could win it. In the end, the victory went to Rule the World. The win saw scenes of jubilation from jockey David Mullins and trainer Michael ‘Mouse’ Morris. All in all, just 16 runners finished the gruelling race, but with such talent on show, it left many punters already looking ahead to next year’s race. The Last Samuri, Vic’s Canvas and several others all showed enough in the race to be in the reckoning for Grand National glory in 2017.
