Bet on 2017 St Patrick's Thursday with William Hill

For the 2017 Cheltenham Festival, St Patrick's Thursday will be held on 16th March, with the first race going off at 13.30pm. St Patrick's Thursday is the 3rd day of the Cheltenham Festival, which is held at Cheltenham Racecourse, Gloucestershire. The Festival is regarded as the most important in jumps (national hunt) racing, hosting several of the year's most prestigious horse races. St Patrick's Thursday holds seven races, including the World Hurdle, Ryanair Chase and JLT Novices' Chase.

The third day of Cheltenham is called St Patrick’s Thursday because of the Irish connections to the Festival. It also falls close to Ireland’s national holiday, St Patrick’s Day (17th March). There has always been Irish connections to the Cheltenham Festival, with the unofficial rivalry between the Irish and British trainers forming a big part of the Festival’s drama. There are seven races held on St Patrick’s Thursday. The marquee race, the World Hurdle, goes off at 15.30pm.

What lies in store for punters on St Patrick's Thursday in 2017? Much will depend on where trainer Willie Mullins places his 'chips'. Conceivably, he could enter Annie Power in the World Hurdle, a race in which she came second in 2014. He may also have the option of putting Un de Sceaux or Douvan into the Ryanair Chase, where they would surely start as favourites. As ever, we will be treated to a fantastic field of runners and riders, and regardless of results we are in for some fabulous racing.

    St Patrick' Thursday - Day 3 - 2016 Results & Winners

WThe crowd at Cheltenham 2016 was treated to some fantastic racing on Day 3 of the Festival. The day opened with a fine win for Ruby Walsh on Black Hercules in the Grade 1 JLT Novices' Chase. After that, Davy Russell scored his second win of the Festival on Mall Dini in the Pertemps Final. Walsh showed no signs of letting his top jockey crown slip, winning the third race of the day (Ryanair Chase) on Vautour. Many had tipped Vautour to be part of the Gold Cup (held on Day 4), but in the end the Willie Mullins trained mount had an easy win in the Grade 1 Ryanair Chase.

Most of the talk of the day centred on the World Hurdle and the form of Colin Tizzard's Thistlecrack. This big, muscular horse had blown away the opposition in lesser races and it had the feeling of a coming out party. He did not disappoint, claiming the World Hurdle with little fuss ahead of Alpha Des Obeaux and Bobs Worth. The penultimate day of Cheltenham 2016 finished off with wins for Empire of Dirt (Festival Group Plate), Limini (Mares' Novices' Hurdle) and Cause of Causes (Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup Handicap Chase).
