Euro 2016

Bet on Euro 2016 with William Hill

Friday 10 June - Sunday 10 July

Euro 2016, the UEFA European Championships 2016, is a football tournament held every four years, contested between European nations. The last championship was held in 2012, with Spain the tournament winners. The 2016 championships will be held in France, beginning on June 10th with the group stages, culminating in a final on July 10th. It is organised so that the 24 teams are put into 6 groups of 4, and they play each once. Matches will be played in all the major French cities, in iconic stadia such as the Stade Vélodrome in Marseille and the Stade des Lumières, Lyon. The final will be held in Stade de France, Saint Denis, which is just outside Paris.

As the hosts, France are the only nation that are absolutely guaranteed to take part in the 2016 Championships. Other teams likely to be participating are England as well as Germany, Spain and Italy. The finals draws will take place after the play-off games in November. Knowing who will win the Euros is uncertain, as nations like Denmark and Greece have won it in the past. Anyone can win it. Spain are going for three wins in a row and World Champions Germany are also favourites. Whoever you fancy for the Euros, William Hill will be offering the latest odds, news and buzz all the way to the Finals!

  • The History of UEFA European Championship

The eyes of the football world are about to turn to France. The cream of European football will soon gather for one of the most prestigious championships in world football, the Euros. For an entire month, national teams will battle it out to become champions of Europe, an honour which can only be bettered by winning the World Cup. And Euro 2016 is shaping up to be better than ever.

While the very first European Championships took place in 1960 with just 4 teams contesting the finals, the tournament rapidly expanded to 8 teams in 1980 and 16 teams by the time it became known as the Euros in 1996. Euro 2016 will be the very first time that a total of 24 teams will contest the finals, competing in a schedule of 6 groups of 4 teams.

Each team will be hoping for glory. And there are plenty of historic moments to look back on for inspiration down the years of this enthralling tournament. The Czech Republic won their sole major title in 1976 thanks to an audacious penalty in a dramatic shoot-out with West Germany. Holland thrilled the football world and were unstoppable thanks to superstars including Ruud Gullit and Marco Van Basten in 1988. However, perhaps the most surprising result of all, possibly one of the biggest football upsets ever, came in 2004 when the hugely unfancied Greek team defeated hosts Portugal to be crowned champions.

    Thrilling Results, Great Football Betting

And of course, the drama continued during the last chapter of the championships, at Euro 2012. On no previous occasion had a team retained their Euro title. But the incredible Spanish side did just that and they did it in style, thoroughly outplaying Italy to romp home as 4-0 winners in the final. In doing so, La Roja became one of the greatest international teams of all time and stars such as Xavi, Iniesta and Pique enhanced their reputations even further. However, they were not the only stars of the tournament. In the groups, the Czech Republic and Greece defied expectations to send Russia and Poland home. Meanwhile, in the semi-finals, Italian striker Mario Balotelli announced his world class quality, hitting the net twice to upset Germany.

Betting Odds for UEFA Euro 2016 Championships

So, what do the football betting odds look like this time round? Well, you can be sure there will be plenty of bets on world champions Germany adding the Euro crown to their title. However, Spain will be desperate to defend the championship which they won in both 2008 and 2012. You can also expect a strong showing from hosts France, who have an exciting, young team at their disposal. Meanwhile, the likes of Italy and Holland will also have high hopes of success.
