Thursday 6th April

2017 Grand National Opening Day Betting with William Hill Online

Grand National Opening Day 2017 will take place on Thursday 6th April, with the first race going off at 13.40(UK). The Grand National Opening Day is the first of three days of the Grand National Festival. It takes place at Aintree Racecourse, near Liverpool in the north west of England. The Festival is obviously most famous for holding the Grand National race, but has grown to become a world class festival in its own right. Nowadays, only Cheltenham can rival it in terms of the number of Grade 1 races. Notable races on Day 1 include the Manifesto Novices’ Chase, the Juvenile Hurdle and the Aintree Hurdle.

You should expect to see seven thrilling races on Opening Day. Many of the best runners and riders from the Cheltenham Festival will also compete at the Grand National Festival. The first four races are Grade 1 races, meaning that they only feature the best national hunt racing horses. Opening Day winners are among the best in the business, with the likes of Desert Orchid, Dawn Run and Wayward Lad delighting the Aintree crowds down the years on Day 1. Grand National Opening day betting is available at William Hill online, with brilliant odds guaranteed for all seven races.

Grand Opening - Day 1 - 2016 Results & Winners

Opening Day in 2016 was a thrilling affair and acted as a bellwether for a brilliant festival to come. The first race, the Grade 1 Manifesto Novices’ Chase, was won by French horse Arzal, in what was a relatively easy finish for jockey Gavin Sheehan. Race 2, the Juvenile Hurdle, saw the Willie Mullins trained Apple Jade land an impressive win, with recent Cheltenham winner Ivanovich Gorbatov 2nd. A strong field of runners, including Don Poli, Djakadam and Cue Card, contested the 3rd race, the Betfred Bowl Chase. It was the canny Cue Card who landed the victory in the end, romping home ahead of his illustrious rivals.

The 4th race showcased once again the class of Annie Power, the short odds favourite, who never looked bothered as she landed another Grade 1 win for jockey Ruby Walsh. Another betting favourite, On the Fringe, landed the next race, the Crabbie’s Fox Hunters’ Chase. The penultimate race, the Red Rum Handicap Chase, went to Katachenko, with Donald McCain Jnr following in his father’s footsteps in training an Aintree winner. Nicky Henderson and Nico de Boinville then teamed up to win the final race of the day, the Mares’ Standard Open NH Flat Race, with Kayf Grace.
