Cheltenham Festival 2019 – some helpful tips to know

Tuesday 12 - Friday 15 March

Betting online at the 2019 Cheltenham Festival

The 2019 Cheltenham Festival will take place over four days from Tuesday 12th March until Friday 15th March. There are 28 races run over the four days, broken down into seven each day.

Kicking things off is the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, with the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle closing the betting for another year.

If you want to know how to place your 2019 Cheltenham Festival bets, then there are three ways that this can be done.

You can bet online, via the William Hill app or by heading into one of shops. All of the runners and riders across the 28 races can be found in all of these locations.

How to bet on the four Championship races

Betting on the favourites hasn’t been a bad strategy when considering the Champion Hurdle odds, with three of the last four market leaders landing the spoils. Meanwhile, only one horse has gone off at odds bigger than 11/1 and won the Champion Chase since 1993.

As for the Stayers’ Hurdle, a productive Cheltenham tip has been to side with horses that finished first or second in their last race, while all of the last 18 Cheltenham Gold Cup winners had already won a Grade 1 race previously.

Those are some tips to help you find some winners of the four Championship races, now you just need to use them to your advantage.

2018 Cheltenham winners back in 2019

Seven horses that won at the 2018 Cheltenham Festival are set to return in 2019 to defend their titles.

Five are among the favourites to repeat their victory, with these being Buveur D’Air (Champion Hurdle), Benie Des Dieux (Mares’ Hurdle), Altior (Champion Chase), Tiger Roll (Cross Country), Penhill (Stayers’ Hurdle) and Native River (Cheltenham Gold Cup).

The one exception comes in the betting for the Foxhunters, with Pacha Du Polder lining up for the fourth straight year. He was ridden to finish fifth by Olympic gold-medallist cyclist Victoria Pendleton in 2016, before being steered to victory by Bryony Frost in 2017 and Miss Harriet Tucker last year.

The Cheltenham weather

Much has been made about how the weather at Cheltenham can impact the chances of runners. Some like the ground quicker, others prefer rain in the ground to ensure that it’s more of a slog.

It’s the latter that are expected to get their way in 2019, with occasional rain predicted on each of the four days of the 2019 Cheltenham Festival.

It may pay to look for Cheltenham tips focused on horses that have previous form on soft going and prefer more of a stamina test than a speed one.

How to get to Cheltenham

The Cheltenham racecourse postcode is GL50 4SH, with its location being in the Gloucestershire countryside.
