Tennis is a game with fairly straightforward rules, albeit one played at a breakneck pace with players firing the ball past, over and occasionally at each other at over 100mph. Even so there are a few tennis terms you need to know to get the most out of following – and betting on – the sport:

- Deuce: for singles matches, when a game is tied at 40-40. A game must be won by two clear points: the winner of the point after Deuce has “advantage”, but if they lose the next point then the score returns to Deuce. - Set: a set consists of games, and the first player to win six games with at least a two-game margin over the opponent claims the set. A match is decided by the player who wins the most sets.
- Tie-break: if a set reaches six games all, then a tie-break will be played to decide who wins that set. Players race to seven points, with the serve changing player every two points. As with the rest of tennis' scoring system, a tie-break must be won by two clear points: if the score is 6-6, then a player must get to at least 8-6 to take the tie-break. If the final set of a Grand Slam match finishes 6-6, the tie-break becomes a race to 10 points.
- Career Grand Slam: when a player wins all four Grand Slams across their career. Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer are the most recent winners of the Career Grand Slam in the men's game, while Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova are the only women to have achieved one in this century.
- Ace: winning a point from serve without the ball being touched by the opponent
