Day 4, the penultimate day of Royal Ascot serves up two elite level Group 1 encounters, with the long-standing Coronation Stakes for three-year-old fillies and the Commonwealth Cup, a 5f race for three-year-old sprinters which has seen three superb renewals in its short life to date.
The Coronation Stakes has been a rich hunting ground for French channel hoppers in recent years, with trainers based in France landing three editions since 2011 and Jean-Claude Rouget particularly successful, sending out Ervedya and Qemah to win back-to-back runnings.
Other races on Day 4 at Royal Ascot include a brace of Group races two start proceedings, courtesy of the Albany Stakes and the King Edward VII Stakes. The latter is usually a good chance to see how many of the colts that have finished down the field in that season’s Derby have trained on since their date with destiny at Epsom.
Then, after the day’s two elite level contests are done there’s two intriguing handicaps to puzzle over in the Sandringham Stakes and the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes.
