Day 1 of the Royal Meeting is one for the purists, with an embarrassment of racing riches in terms of quality throughout the Tuesday.
Hold on to your top hat, because Day 1 kicks off with a cavalcade of top class flat racing. First up comes the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes, followed by the Group 2 Coventry Stakes, the Group 1 King’s Stand Stakes and the Group 1 St James’s Palace Stakes.
Respite from the sheer quality of thoroughbred racehorse on show at Royal Ascot comes in the Ascot Stakes, a handicap for stayers, but this usually the queue for leading jumps trainer’s like Willie Mullins or Nicky Henderson to pitch their charges in against the flat boys in a thrilling clash of codes.
The day ends with the Wolferton Stakes, a listed handicap that’s the kind of contest for people who like betting horses at big odds, as it usually boasts at least the 16 runners needed for four places to be paid on each way bets. Watch out for John Gosden’s runners in the race, he’s won it three times since 2010.
