Bet on Royal Ascot Opening Day Online at William Hill

The Royal Meeting 20th June

They Royal Meeting (Day 1 of Royal Ascot) starts on Tuesday 20th June 2017. It is held at the beautiful Ascot Racecourse, Berkshire. It heralds the beginning of a five-day horse racing festival that features some of the best runners and riders from all over the world. There is much pageantry off the track at Ascot, with the Queen and other members of the Royal Family regularly appearing at the Festival. There is also the famous Ladies’ Day, which takes place the same day as the Gold Cup. The dress code for Ladies’ Day and the other race days at Ascot is much more formal than other festivals, so dress to impress!

  • June 20 - The Royal Meeting Ascot Racecourse, Berkshire
  • June 21 - Prince of Wales's Stakes Ascot Racecourse, Berkshire
  • June 22 - Gold Cup Day Ascot Racecourse, Berkshire
  • June 23 - Coronation Stakes Ascot Racecourse, Berkshire
  • June 24 - Diamond Jubilee Stakes Day Ascot Racecourse, Berkshire
  • Despite the festivities, the racing always takes centre stage and Royal Ascot delivers the action in style. There are six races on Day 1, with the highlights being the King’s Stand Stakes and St James’s Palace Stakes. The first race of the Royal Meeting is the Queen Anne Stakes, which goes off at 2.30 (UK). The festival will hold 30 races in all, with six also held on Prince of Wales Stakes Day (21st June), Gold Cup Day (22nd June), Coronation Stakes Day (23rd June) and the Diamond Jubilee Stakes Day (24th June).

2016 Royal Ascot Day 1 Results and Review

Last year’s Royal Ascot Opening Day races made sure the festival got off with a bang. The Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes kicked off the day, delivering a win for American horse Tepin and jockey Julien Leparoux. It was Tepin’s first race in Europe, but the win wasn’t a big surprise given the mare’s form back in the USA. The Coventry Stakes came next, with Ryan Moore riding the favourite Caravaggio to a comprehensive victory. The win meant a record eight victories in the Coventry Stakes for trainer Aidan O’Brien. The second Group 1 race of the day, the King’s Stand Stakes came next. In what was hopefully a good omen for punters on the first day of Royal Ascot, the winning horse was named Profitable. Winning jockey Adam Kirby had two reasons to celebrate – he had become father of a baby boy two hours before the race!

2016 Royal Ascot Runners & Jockeys

The feature race of the day, the St James’s Palace Stakes, came next. It was won by Galileo Gold with crowd favourite Frankie Dettori in the saddle. Galileo Gold beat off strong competition from The Gurkha, who was odds-on favourite when the race went off. The next race, the Ascot Stakes, saw Jennies Jewel land the win for Irish trainer Jarlath Fahey. The win proved that even small training operations like Fahey’s in Kildare can taste glory at Royal Ascot. The final race of the day, the Windsor Castle Stakes, went to Ardad and Jockey Richard Havlin.

Royal Ascot 2017 Betting, Runners, Riders and Odds

The 2017 Royal Meeting promises to be as spectacular as ever. The Queen Anne Stakes could perhaps see the brilliant Irish filly Minding start as favourite. She beat a stellar field, which included Awtaad and Galileo Gold, in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot in October 2016. Other 2017 Day 1 runners could include Lady Aurelia, Churchill, Caravaggio and Profitable, all of whom tasted success at last year’s festival.
